An Exciting Night for the Super Stocks, Jax Brings it Home in 7th
September 9 at CNS had the Super Stocks on the schedule along with Late Models and Grand American Modifieds.
The last couple of races were a great showing for Jax Hughes, adding another top 5 to his season. His position of 4th in points was getting pretty solid and these good finishes were building up his points cushion over those behind him. Getting up to third was looking to be beyond reach without some help. But as we were setting up our pit and getting ready for practice, we saw that the third place car of Brinlee was not in the pits.
Practice was okay, we were running on 1 race-old tires, and getting what we expected out of them. Qualifying came around and Jax found himself on the bubble of the fast dash in the 12th position, which is also where he finished in the fast dash.
Late in the season brings a new mindset when in the top few points positions. While still being aggressive, there’s a certain amount of caution that must be present to preserve where you’re at and not take a chance of a DNF, or worse, really tearing up the car. Banging fenders with Jonathan Lindberg is not something you want to go out and do at this point unless it’s for a win. So, in this week’s contest, the fender banging with Jonathan Lindberg was left to Chris Cox – and what a show they put on in the Super Stock main. Congrats to Jonathan on the win, and to the top 5 cars for all of the excitement up front. Jax brought the 51 home in 7th position, and gained enough points to take a small, 10 point cushion into the last race over Nick Brinlee. Jax just inherited third in points.
The next race is the final race of the season for the Super Stocks – Saturday, September 23. Thanks to Sundance Automotive Repair, Colorado Axle and Gear, and all of our family and friends that make this possible, and to Colorado National Speedway for the venue. We’ll see you in a couple of weeks.
