Another Top 5 Finish For Jax Hughes
The July 15 race at Colorado National Speedway saw action from the Super Late Models, Grand American Modifieds, Super Modifieds, and our own Super Stock division. It turned into a cool summer evening, after a spooky storm passed to the south of the track and ultimately “rained out” qualifying for all divisions.
Jax posted fifth quick in practice right off of the trailer. The car count was just a few less than normal, at 19 Super Stocks. Darrell Smith was out in his G body after last race’s pile up in turn one that found the 21 car parked on the hood of his Caprice. We’re told that we should see the Caprice back in action by the next race. The familiar cars of Cox, Cox, Brinlee, and Cortese were the quickest in the first practice. Lap times dropped as the clouds and weather moved in.
Qualifying was determined by points standings and a pill draw for the Fast Dash. Jax drew number 9 starting spot. With just ten laps against the top of the class, it is a good strategy at this point to save tires and work on your line, which he did, and finished 7th.
The pill draw for the main was a whole other story, and resulted in a great starting position – 3rd. Chris Cox jumped out to an early lead, but the excitement was the race for second. Three-wide scrambles with the next five cars kept fans on the edge of their seats. Jax found himself on the outside, on the inside, and in the middle throughout the first half of the race. Cox and Brinlee then made a break for the top spot, while Mike Cox, Kody Vanderwal, and Jax Hughes settled in behind them for the remaining laps. Brinlee pulled off an exciting pass on the last lap for the win. Jax came out 5th – his second top 5 in as many races!
The Super Stocks return to action on July 29 for the Lincoln Tech Careers That Build America night at Colorado National Speedway. Along with the Super Stocks will be a 100 lap Super Late Model main, Modified Coupes, Pure Stocks, Legends, and Trains. It’s going to be a night of big car counts and great racing action. We hope to see you all there! Thanks to family and friends, Colorado Axle and Gear, and Sundance Automotive Repair for all of the help and support!
